REVIEW: “Accidental Man Whore” by Katherine Stevens

I Love Katherine Stevens however “Accidental Man Whore” took a lot to get into.  The answer lies in the Hero and Heroine; who’s glaring flaws are irritating but integral to the storyline.  The Heroine, Miryam is shallow, judgmental, and self-absorbed.  On the other hand she’s a good friend and fantastic granddaughter.  She also gets dumped by her fiancé months before their wedding in a humiliating fashion.  So, I try to cut her some slack.  Ben is definitely NOT an Alpha Hero.  As many characters say, even Ben himself … he’s an idiot.  A sexy, funny, lovable, and sweet idiot.  To be fair his father’s delusional, frustrating, and suffering from colon cancer; so he’s got a lot on his plate.  When you’re desperate for money and it appears while you’re too distracted for questions … I’ll let it slide.  A lot of Suspension of Disbelief is needed for “Accidental Man Whore”.

Ben Wright started a business he loves; watering plants.  He’s just starting out but he’s got a few buildings on contract so he’s doing okay.  Although he does drive a windowless van that is NOT a chick magnet.  Ben lost his mother to cancer.  It struck hard and fast.  All he has left is his little brother and grumpy dad.  When Ben finds out that his father is diagnosed with “ass cancer” he understandably freaks out.  He remembers the cost of his mother’s care.  Now his father’s older and out of work he’s really freaking out.  Ben’s father’s doctor is a personal friend who doesn’t charge him for office visits or his medication.  So dad has unrealistic expectations of how things work in the Real Medical World.  Ben and his brother need to come up with fifty thousand dollars ASAP.

One of the offices that Ben services is an Entertainment company.  Everyone who works there is gorgeous however the boss scares him.  Stephanie’s very intense.  She looks at him like she’s like to tie him to her bed, gag him, and cause him pain.  However one evening she tells him she’s a man down for one of her company’s parties.  She asks if he would like to help her out for $1000.  Stephanie tells him to expect a driver to show up at his place with clothes.  The driver will take him to and from the party.  All he has to do is be nice to the guests.  He arrives at the party and he’s a chick magnet.  Unfortunately a woman at the party vomits on him so he calls the driver and goes home.  But he still gets to keep the money.

He meets with Stephanie the next morning to return the clothes and such she asks him to attend another event.  Ben doesn’t understand why he’s making so much money just by going to parties.  But he’s not going to jinx things by asking questions.  Plus Stephanie slipped him an extra $500 to not ask questions.  However things change when he’s told he’s been requested for a “private party”.  But the pay for this gig is $5000 and his dad’s surgery is almost paid for so of course he goes.  Sweet naïve Ben’s concerned he’s going to get into trouble for having sex with a guest during work hours.  Ben continues going to parties and making money hand over fist.  His best friend is suspicious.  Especially since there aren’t bodies at the end of the night to bury.  His father’s disgruntled because he thinks Ben is selling drugs and won’t share.

Miryam’s an attorney engaged to marry the love of her life.  A handsome Jewish attorney in her firm.  Miryam’s bubbie raised her after her mother died when she was ten years-old.  Now bubbie is blind and Miryam worries about her.  Miryam’s best friend is Sheba and the opposite of Miryam.  She’s wild and crazy and in charge of Miryam’s Bachelorette Party.  This is when Miryam and Ben should have a Meet/Cute but it goes a little differently.  They bump into each other and Miryam’s drink spills on her and Ben tries to help wipe her off.  However Miryam makes a scene accusing Ben of trying to fondle her breasts.  She calls him a creep and almost gets him beat up by a gang of tough women.  She thinks he’s a Perv.  He thinks she’s a raging bitch.  However both think the other is sexy as Hell.

Miryam’s fiancé dumps her for his paralegal a couple of months before the wedding.  She doesn’t want to break her bubbie’s heart with the bad news.  Therefore, with Sheba’s help, she’s going with a different plan.  Sheba was at a club where one of Ben’s parties was at.  She saw him, knew exactly what he was, and got a the phone number to hire him.  Little does she know Ben’s the man Miryam swears groped her at her Bachelorette party.  But Miryam’s desperate.  Her aunt’s are aware of the David situation.  The only person Miryam needs to fool is her sweet blind bubbie.  So Ben’s hired to pretend to be Miryam’s ex-fiancé David and attend at bar mitzvah with her.  Ben isn’t happy to be helping Miryam trick her grandma.  But he’s needs the money.

Miryam’s hot, bitchy, but there’s something about her that attracts him.  She also made it clear.  No sex.  However the plan doesn’t go that smoothly.  Bubbie wants David/Ben to say the prayers at dinner.  Ben isn’t Jewish.  So Miryam has to jump in work things in order to keep the ruse going.  This is going to be a one time gig however a bris comes up.  The new parents want Miryam and David to hold the baby during the ceremony.  In fact they’ve given the baby David’s name as his middle name.  Miryam needs Ben once again.  Ben doesn’t know what a bris is and is horrified.  However when they discover the baby’s first name is Benjamin they have an inside joke.  The more time they spend together the easier they are in each other’s company.  Miryam asks for Ben’s personal phone number because calling Stephanie scares her.

Once Ben and Miryam start using Ben’s real phone their relationship changes.  They tell each other about their past.  About her dad leaving her mother before she was born.  Ben tells her about his mother dying from cancer.  They learn that both are caregivers when their loved ones are sick.  When Miryam has a bad day she calls Ben to meet for ice cream.  They can’t resist each other and have sex.  This is a huge turning point for Ben.  He realizes that Miryam is special to him and he doesn’t feel right attending the parties Stephanie’s company throws.  He especially doesn’t want to entertain the women for the private parties.

When Ben tells Stephanie he quits.  That’s when he discovers he was hired to be a prostitute.  Stephanie threatens to turn him into the cops if he quits.  But Ben sticks to his guns even though he’s scared and he realizes he’s an idiot for not seeing it.  He tries to ask for advise from his dad without coming out and telling his story.  Ben doesn’t have time to talk to his dad’s police officer friend because he’s meeting Miryam.  However the next morning the police are at his door.  Ben gets taken in to the station when Stephanie’s organization is brought down.

When Ben and Miryam start working together and finally give into their attractions the story ROCKS.  Miryam and Ben don’t have sex when they’re on Stephanie arranged dates.  Which makes things a little cleaner.  When Ben and Miryam are on they are adorable, sexy, and amusing.  Unfortunately it takes a while for Katherine Stevens to get us there.  Past the halfway point.  Miryam really was difficult for me to enjoy.  Ben’s naïveté/idiocy is almost painful at times too.  On the other hand the book had me laughing chuckling from the beginning.  Now did I enjoy “Accidental Man Whore”?  YES.  Is the romance funny, sexy, and sweet? Yes.  Am I happy I read it?  Yes.  Is “Accidental Man Whore” Katherine Stevens’ BEST book?  No.  But Katherine Stevens can make me laugh like nobody’s business.  So, will I snatch up her next book like 95% off Jimmy Choos?  Yes I will.

I’m giving ” Accidental Man Whore” 3 Lightning Bolts and a Hurricane Warning.
